Wednesday
“Well, it's going to happen in a minute!” my husband Peter said to me when we settled in the airplane seat. Immediately the plane would leave for Malaga, from where we would get a transfer to hotel 'Costa Lago' in Torremolinos. We would stay there for eight days. Last month we had been married for twenty-five years and the money we received from the guests who came to our party allowed us to make this trip. Last night our son had taken us to Schiphol; the plane would leave at five to seven. We were right on time and after checking in we went to security. There we were asked if we had drinks in our hand luggage. Oops, so yeah, forgot to drink it. We quickly drank our bottles and threw them in the trash. Then Peter had to take off his belt, we put our hand luggage on the belt and Peter was the first to walk through the gate. Then the alarm went off... It reacted to the zipper on his vest. He was then searched. I had fun inside, it was nice to see. Arriving at the gate, we noticed an interviewer walking around. The woman sitting behind us was asked questions and I hoped the interviewer would come to me as well. I always like that kind of thing. Sure enough, she came up to me and asked me some questions. It was mainly about flying, the first question was whether I had flown in the last year. No, the last time was in 2010, an aid trip to Romania. And now this flight, for Peter the second time in his life. We both find the ascent a separate experience, especially the moment the aircraft lifts off the ground. And then hang at an angle all the time, until it is at height. More than eleven kilometers, we heard from the pilot. The flight would take fifteen minutes shorter than the announced three hours.
Arrival
The blue sea, the mountains and Ikea. That was our first impression of Malaga from the air. I managed to get a photo of Ikea and shortly afterwards the pilot grounded the plane. We found our way to the baggage claim where it took us a while to get our bags. In the hall we soon saw the hostess of the travel agency who told us how to get to the bus. We tasted a bit of Spanish air for a while, after which we had to go back inside somewhere where there was an elevator that led to a parking garage. The bus was already waiting there. We were the first and it took quite a while for the bus to leave. We immediately got into subtropical atmospheres because of the palm trees we saw along the way. The drive to the hotel was short and when we got there we walked to the reception and I greeted receptionist Eva - judging by her name tag - with a warm, "Buenos dias." I immediately got a load of Spanish over me. Had I spoken without an accent? We soon found out that she spoke Dutch and it was so easy to communicate. She told me that she had lived in the Netherlands for eleven years. She asked if we would like to have an early dinner, from half past five, or later, from a quarter to eight. We chose the first option.
We were given the key to room 288. It was on the second floor. I had already seen what the room looked like on the internet and it was indeed correct. A spacious room with bathroom, toilet, bidet and bath and a balcony. Unfortunately, that was on the shady side. We hung our coats in the closet – if all went well we wouldn't need them here – and decided to explore the area.
Eva gave us a map and she showed us how to walk to the center. So we went completely in the wrong direction. Every street name was not on the map. When we noticed that, we walked the other way and saw a supermarket. We decided to get some packs of drinks and bottles of water. We also both bought sunglasses for five euros and I saw a pair of nice pink earrings that I couldn't resist. On the way back we had coffee at 'punto y coma' which was very tasty. We took the road back along the beach. I had already taken quite a few pictures.
Back in our room, we put the groceries in the cupboard and decided to lie down in the sun by the pool. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, especially with the thought in the background that it was winter in the Netherlands.
Dinner was unbeatable. We were personally welcomed by head waiter Miguel and he pointed us to a regular table, table sixty. If we didn't like it we had to say so we would get another table. We thought it was a fine place, close to the dishes on display. It was too much to mention: Two kinds of soup, bread, different kinds of pasta, meat and fish. Salads, sauces, vegetables, potatoes, rice, everything. Behind the showcases we saw the chefs at work, which is called show cooking. I was absolutely delighted with the desserts. Different kinds of cake, bavarois, puddings, ice cream, fruit... It was great! I went in the evening
